Call for Workshop Leader Thu, 24 Sep 2015 17:09:31 +0000 For the upcoming

ISHA New Year’s Seminar 2016 ‘History and Fiction’,

from January, 4th to 9th, 2016,

taking place in Marburg, Germany, ISHA Marburg is still looking for avid workshop leaders.

isha marburg wants you for ws lead

There are currently three workshops with an open spot for leading, with the topics of

  • Historical fiction

Did you know, that the genre of historical prose fiction, today’s ‘historical novels’, could be dated back to Classical Greek novelists, such as Homer’s ‘Iliad’ about the Trojan War? From Caesar’s ‘De bello gallico’ and Shakespeare’s historical play ‘Richard III’ to the current television adaptation of the Norse sagas about Ragnar Lothbrok in ‘Vikings’, setting the story in a temporal past has always been a popular narrative and presents a decisive influence on people’s conceptions of history. Questions for discussion could be an analysis of authenticity of the presented historical conditions, as well as its reception by the public and critics.

  • Political Myths

‘Jet fuel can’t melt steel beams’, so 9/11 had to be an inside job orchestrated by the US government to wage war against Afghanistan and in the Iraq. The Germany Army was undefeated during the Great War, however the Socialdemocratic parties forced the German Empire to surrender.

‘Think of Lenin, Mao or Castro, who became symbols for revolutionary ideologies, of de Gaulle as symbol of a free France or of Adenauer and Erhard, symbols for the reincarnation of Germany and the German economic miracle of the post-war period.’

(Yves Bizeul, in ‘Politische Mythen im 19. und 20. Jahrhundert in Mittel- und Osteuropa’, ed. H. Hein-Kircher, Hans H. Hahn, Marburg: 2006)

Political myths created and brought down nations. We’d be interested in the story and people behind them. But of course, you would need to find out first the difference between ‘fact’ and ‘myth’.

  • Fairy tales and folk tales

‘Once upon a time …’, every child grew up with tales of fairies, trolls and witches. While most fairy tales obviously are fictious, many folk tales claim to be true and explanatory. Every country, every culture, has its own folk tales, about the origin of place names, about the lives of people. May it be fossilised trolls who are now rocks in Norway’s Trollholmsund or tales about witches collected in the notorious Malleus Maleficarum to identify witches for the inquisition in the 15th century, there is much to be told.

These suggestions are merely a few ideas by ISHA Marburg to give you an impression of what could be topic in the workshops, and are not mandatory.

Every workshop leader will have a local co-leader from Marburg to cooperate with and who will help with the organisational parts, so that you can focus on your academic realisation.

If your are interested in one of the topics above and / or have further questions please contact us at

Please give us a introduction of why you would like to lead the workshop, ideally with a concept of how / what you would like to do and your qualifications. In order to maintain a solid academic level for our workshops, for the position of workshop leaders we will favour applicants who are advanced in their studies and who have attended ISHA seminars and workshops before; and of course should have time at the seminar dates 😉

>> The deadline for applications for workshop leaders is on October, 10th 2015. <<
